Rivers of Germany and Austria Overview

Throughout time, rivers have played a vital role in the history and culture of mankind. Some of the most notable rivers in Germany and Austria are the Rhine, Mosel, Mainz, and Danube rivers. Along these rivers are beautiful scenery, vineyards, castles, medieval towns, and ruins that date back to early Roman times.

There are many river boat companies such as Viking Cruises that will take you on extended trips along these beautiful rivers. (To see read about our Viking river cruises, click on the Europe River Cruises link from our home page.) In addition to taking a river trip, you can also enjoy many of the scenic river areas through a combination of land travel and day boat trips. This was the approach used in the Rivers of Germany trip.

Working with a professional European tour planner, Warren Ennen, our local tour company, Homespun Tours, put together customized Europe rivers trip.  Warren, has many years experience planning European tours for Holiday Travel and often works with a local Austrian tour guide, Willie ——, to make connections and help guide the group.

Wannen planned the Rivers of Germany trip to provide people with an experience traveling along and on Rhine, Mosel, Mane, and Danube rivers of Germany and Austria. We stayed in stayed four and five star hotels located along the river route in historical and beautiful settings. Each day of our 8-day trip included tours of historical and medieval city centers along with several river boat rides on some of the most scenic parts of the Rhine, Mosel, and Danube rivers.

Our travel itinerary took the group on Delta airlines from Minneapolis International airport to Detroit and then directly from Detroit to Frankfurt. The Detroit airport has been recently remodeled and easy to get around in. The airport features a modern shopping area complete with nice restaurants and relaxing lounge areas.
